Frances Chang is a boundary-pushing songwriter, producer and performer. Born to immigrant parents in Chicago and raised in New York, Chang’s musical practice grew autonomously through bedroom recordings. Her formative live experiences were shaped by her early exposure to DIY punk scenes.
Largely self-taught as a musician, Chang’s output has long been marked by a sense of curiosity and experimentation across her own music, releases alongside collaborators and contributions to film scores. In 2022 Chang self-released support your local nihilist, her first album under her name. During the production of 2024’s Psychedelic Anxiety (Chang’s solo follow-up to support your local nihilist), she began collaborating with Andréa Schiavelli (Eyes of Love). Alongside Schiavelli, Chang formed a live trio with Liza Winter (birthing hips) for the album’s tour. The eclecticism evident in Chang’s music has found parallel expression via interdisciplinary new media projects like her found poetry project ORACLE, based on the I Ching.
In January 2026, Chang released “I can feel the waves,” the A side of a two track 7” which she would bring on a nationwide tour of North America supporting Cate Le Bon. The single, supported with a video co-directed by April Wen, was followed up in April 2026 with “No avatar,” both singles praised by The Guardian
