Seattle band Black Whales released their 2nd LP- the swirling, psych-pop ode to change “Through the Prism, Gently” in November 2014 on Idaho based record label Sunless Sea Records.

“Through the Prism, Gently” nods heavily to such psych-pop predecessors as The Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, and The Jesus and Mary Chain while forging their own path- incorporating more modern influences from The War on Drugs and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to The Flaming Lips and Spiritualized.

A band since 2008, Black Whales the band is comprised of Alex Robert on guitar and lead vocals, Mica Crisp on guitar, Adam Fream on drums, Ryan Middleton on bass, and David Martin on keys and backup vocals. In September 2009, The Black Whales released their debut EP entitled Origins on Mt. Fuji Records. Their unique sound has taken them around the US and saw Black Whales share stages with bands like The Breeders, Wooden Shjips, Vetiver, Mikal Cronin, The Presidents of the United States of America, among others. The band has traveled coast to coast, playing festivals from national events such as SXSW, CMJ, San Diego Music Thing, Sasquatch, and Bumbershoot to more local NorthWest events such as, Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party, Doe Bay Fest, West Seattle Fest and Portland’s MusicFest NW. In 2010 Black Whales began working on material which would become “Through the Prism, Gently” a troubadour process of sorts utilizing the recording and mixing talents of Richard Swift (The Shins, Foxygen, Damien Jurado) and Eric Corson (The Long Winters, Perfume Genius), among others.

"The Seattle quintet treads delicately on enough musical styles that none really define the band...Rather than mimicking the styles of their heroes they do what any band worth a second listen does: they eke out their own sound from those colliding influences." / GLORIOUS NOISE

"They’re magic, the Black Whales are magic…that’s the only explanation for it." / THE SEATTLE STRANGER
